It seems that sleep plays such an ordinary and inconsequential role in our life that we rarely pay much attention to it. At least until we ourselves experience some sort of sleeping troubles.
All of us living in today's modern and competitive societies have to learn how to deal with things like stress and other factors that can potentially lead to different sleep disorders. |
Unfortunately, many people have a hard time trying to adjust to the rapid pace of today's life and its challenges. They are more likely to suffer psychological or emotional problems eventually leading to sleeping troubles.
Many sources also agree that lack of sleep among people in developed countries has reached epidemic levels and is one of the top health concerns. What complicates this issue is a common belief that problems with sleep are not really medical in nature and that conviction is often preventing people from seeking professional help. That's why we think it is so important to talk about sleep, provide information, and make people aware how important a sound sleep is to our health.
An insufficient number of hours of sleep may lead to sleep deprivation and can cause significant impact on short and long term memory, concentration, mood and performance at school or at work.
Over 100 different types of sleep disorders can be classified into four categories:
- Difficulties with falling and staying asleep (insomnias)
- Difficulties with staying awake (narcolepsy, sleep apnea)
- Disturbance in sleep/wake cycle (jet lag, shift changes)
- Sleep interruptions associated with behavioral problems
(sleepwalking, enuresis)
Sleeping problems may be a result of different, sometimes serious, medical conditions. If you are tired all the time, can't fall or stay asleep, or experience other sleep problems for more than one week you should not ignore them and talk to your doctor.
